Our Bringnox Smart Blinds Specs
The model we purchased was the “Bringnox Motorized Light Filtering Roller Shades 70% Blackout Essential” and we opted for the Matter over Threads motor, the optional solar panel, the 15-channel remote, and the smart hub (not necessary, but we’ll talk about this later). This setup would dress the primary kitchen window as we spend quite a bit of time in this space so it was the perfect windows to upgrade for our test. Again, this post is NOT sponsored by Bringnox, and this is NOT an affilliate link. We are simply providing it to show you what we ordered.
The installation was very simple and straight forward. We needed to cut out a section of decorative film in order to accommodate for the solar panel but if you do not plan to use the solar panel, the blinds come with a USB-C cable that you can plug into your outlets.
As soon as we installed it, we noticed it immediately brightened and enhanced the look of our kitchen with a perfect balance of soft natural light and privacy. These shades, made from durable, easy-to-clean polyester comes in various colors (we chose a light grey) and filter up to 70% of sunlight — ideal for reducing glare during breakfast prep or evening gatherings without darkening the kitchen entirely.
NOTE: You’ll notice the lower section of the window is darker, that is because we have a anti-glare tinted film on that section of the window.
Customizable to fit windows up to 72 inches wide and tall, they ensure a sleek, tailored look for your space. Powered by a whisper-quiet motor (under 45 dB) and rechargeable lithium-ion batteries lasting up to 6 months. As mentioned before, they can be plugged in to recharge, or operate “wire-free” using the optional solar panel add-ons, perfect for eco-friendly wire snobs like me.
With Matter compatibility, these motorized roller shades integrate with mainstream voice assistants like Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit — imagine saying, “Hey Google, close the kitchen shades” while cooking. Or “Hey Siri, it’s bedtime” and all your lights turn off, and all your smart blinds auto close, wouldn’t that be neat?
Welcome to the age of the Jetsons! Now if only there was something to keep our sink clean and dry at all times 😏
Installing the Bringnox Smart Blinds
Installing the Bringnox smart blinds on our kitchen window was not intimidating for us. We’re not super handy, but we had installed manual open-close shades on the window prior, so we were pretty comfortable with this DIY project. Bringnox makes it pretty easy that even beginners can tackle the install in about 30 minutes (1 hr if you’re the super meticulous type). The package includes all mounting hardware, brackets, and a decently detailed manual to follow.
Our kitchen window isn’t recessed enough for the inside mount option, so we went with the outside mount instead. We prefer outside mount anyway so it worked out.
Outside mount is much more forgiving when it comes to measurements. You don’t need to be super precise since you want the blinds to to past the edge. This also helps prevent light seeping thru the sides, because (in case you don’t know) windows are NOT perfectly straight.
With outside mount, we started by measuring your window trying to center the shade as best as possible. It’s ok if you aren’t perfectly center, once installed you will actually be able to move the entire assembly left and right for small adjustments. Just do the best you can.
For us, we tried to use the original mounting holes from the previous shades, but unfortunately it would not work in our situation so we just quickly drilled new ones into the studs. Next we secured the brackets to the window frame and the entire assembly snaps into place with a very satisfying “click”. Absolutely no hassle whatsoever. You can see the old mounting mounts that we had to patch up, but didn’t have the right paint to completely finish the job. It’s OK, we hardly notice it.
The next step we did was install the solar panel. On the top glass panel we installed a patterned frosted film for privacy reasons. The tinted film on the bottom darkens the room a bit, and we didn’t want to install the same film at the top, as it would dim the kitchen excessively. The frosted film allows plenty of light to enter while preventing any 2nd floor peeping toms.
In order for the solar panel to properly intake light, we cut a section out of the frosted film the exact size of the solar panel, thus allowing the use of the included double sided tape to securely adhere the panel onto the glass. With a quick cable routing, we were able to tuck everything neatly behind the valance and plug the solar panel into the smart motor (seen in the following image).
Taking out the 15-channel remote, the Bringnox smart blinds worked immediately. It seems that Bringnox must’ve paired the device for your before shipping it out, nice touch, great job! We appreciate little things like that to make our lives easier. In a future article, we will investigate pairing multiple blinds to the same remote. We wanted to make sure that this one smart blinds met our needs first before investing more money.
If you are considering these shades or smart blinds from any other company, you definitely want to take into consideration expandability. Do you plan to just have 1 set? or deck out your entire house? If there is any remote possibility that you will expand the number of smart blinds, we recommend getting the 15-channel remote. It was an extra $20 when we ordered our blinds, which is a very reasonable expense for future proofing. Here’s what it looks like…
Usability & Impressions
As of writing this article, we’ve actually been using this smart blind for several months. We wanted to make sure we knew what we were talking about before we shared our experience with you, our valuable readers. And we can comfortable say that we highly recommend these Bringnox smart blinds. In fact we plan to purchase several more units of different styles to upgrade some other areas in our home.
To understand our logic, let us run down the reasons why we wanted smart blinds in the first place (ranked by priority):
- Integration & Automation: There’s plenty of brands out there that have a seemingly closed ecosystem or only offer one connection technology and not the others. Bringnox’s product offers everything under one roof (if you opt for the Matter over Threads motor). We went with the top-end motor along with a hub (which isn’t necessary) and now looking back, we could have gotten away with the standard motor + hub setup. We also chose the top-end motor because we eventually want to shift our ecosystem to Apple HomeKit. The way we programmed our automation is to open the blinds daily at a certain time, and close it at a certain time (this alone was a game changer for us, we LOVE the ability to do this).
- Cost: This was the 2nd most important factor because if the product doesn’t perform well in #1, then who cares how much it costs? It also just so happens that Bringox is extremely affordable and fit well within our budget.
- Design: Form comes after function for us, and that may not be in your case, but from our research, many of the competitors on the marketplace all look pretty much the same, so we didn’t really have much choice. Bringnox offers some neat customizations to the top valence cover, fabric colors/styles, and the bottom rod. We went with the light grey color, the “Tonal valence with fabric inserts” and the “square bottom rod” as this suited the look we were going for.
- Noise & Performance: Bringnox states their motors are high-efficiency, low-noise motors which operate with < 45dB of noise. For most people, these numbers don’t mean much, but we can tell you that from our usage, the motor is sufficiently quiet. It’s definitely not silent, but in our daily life and how we actually use it, we actually never hear it operating since we rely on time-of-day automations.
- Other minor considerations: We did take into consideration battery life, but since we knew we were going the solar panel route, we didn’t really test the battery life. Bringnox claims 4-6 months of use on a single charge, which is pretty incredible! We did look at user reviews, but in today’s day and age, who knows how those things get generated, so we didn’t give it much weight. We knew there were risks involved in trying a newer brand, but we are glad we did. Lastly we considered the app ecosystem too, which is another reason we chose the Matter motor, because any Matter compatible hardware (we have a Google Nest Hub MAX) is able to connect to this directly.
Conclusion & Closing Thoughts
Overall, we think the Bringnox smart blinds is a phenomenal bang for your buck. Their design language is simple, but elegant. Packed full of technology that will make any techie smile, yet simple enough to use that even the most reluctant Boomer can operate.
We recommend the standard motor + hub over the Matter motor unless you are an Apple HomeKit ecosystem, then you don’t have a choice. Our home is a Google ecosystem, and even though the Matter connectivity was fine when connected to our Google Nest Hub MAX, we experienced intermittent disconnects. These disconnects required us to reset the motor and pair again. Although not frequent, it happened enough for us to finally bust out the hub. With the hub, we have not experienced any disconnects over several months so we can confidently recommend using the hub if you are looking for maximum uptime.
We also recommend the solar panel option as an upgrade (unless you have easy access to an outlet near your window, or you don’t care about exposed hanging wires). Climbing up to plug in and charge the motor every 4-6 months was just not in the books for us, so we were either going to use with the included USB-C wire, or with the solar panel, and we opted for solar. We don’t regret that one bit.
A cautionary note about using voice activation. In Google it recognizes voice commands such as “Open the blinds”, or “close the blinds” but if you want to open them partially, it won’t recognize the commend “open blinds half way” or “close parts 25%” instead we say “set blinds to XX%” where the number corresponds to how open you want your blinds (100% being all the way open, and 0% being all the way closed).
We hope these observations can help you make an informed decision for your smart home. Stay tuned for our next article where we cover our expansion journey as we purchase more blinds to upgrade the rest of our home. Feel free to check out some of our smart home tech articles. Who knows, you might find something that will further enhance your life.
